    VPN Speed Tests

    When we review a VPN service, we usually conduct various specific speed tests across the provider’s server network. In addition we also asses general performance by viewing streaming media files, watching TV shows, etc.

    Note: Our overall ratings (on individual reviews) also take into account privacy and protection, server choices, customer service, and price.

    Speed Test Methodology

    How our tests are conducted:-

    Bandwidth Test – Ran via speedtest.net. This is a common generic test many people use and measures overall bandwidth, but doesn’t always relate very well to actual performance, which is why we also do the next two tests.

    Download Test – Done via command line using Curl in Windows Powershell, or Terminal in Mac or Linux. We choose a large file to download so we get a good average speed measurement. For the file itself, we typically download a common Linux distro like Ubuntu or Linux Mint. This test is meant to measure what you might experience downloading large files yourself. It may also be somewhat of an indicator of how well streaming video might perform.

    Torrent/P2P Test – Torrent download using a popular client such as uTorrent, Transmission, or Deluge. We keep the default settings on the client (except for the open port if the VPN allows port forwarding) and we grab a very well seeded torrent for a Linux distro (Ubuntu, Linux Mint, Debian, etc.). This is our favourite test and probably a more reliable indicator of real-world speed performance than anything else since peer connections are typically happening from all over the world. We do this test whenever it’s allowed on the server, but unfortunately not all VPN servers allow it.

    Streaming Video – Although we don’t publish a specific speed measurement for this, we do typically watch at least a couple videos on major streaming services to see if they perform at an acceptable level and line up with the other tests. We also check to see if the VPN connection is bypassing geographic access restrictions properly.

    Disclaimer Note: Our speed tests are for guidance only and meant to be a general indicator. Our tests cannot cover every variable that may arise when using a VPN service. We also don’t make any claims that our speed test results are typical or that you may achieve similar results, since they are a snapshot in time from single locations. There are simply too many factors involved when assessing network speeds across and from different geographical locations.
